Does anyone out there remember Cream? The first few notes of “I Feel Free” grab your attention, promising you that some incredible music is about to follow. How is it possible that these three guys, Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker could be so talented, so creative, so cool?
When I first sat down to write this piece, I thought I
would compare the flavor of our CRYSTALLIZED GINGER with the (shall we say) somewhat eccentric personality of Cream’s drummer, the late Ginger Baker. After all, in each piece of our crystallized ginger there is a snappy, attention-getting true ginger flavor which is pleasantly offset by the sweetness of the surrounding sugar crystals. Almost immediately, I realized how inadequate that comparison would be.
A more appropriate metaphor for G.B.’s character would be our dried SPICY MANGO slices. When I first tasted this spicy mango, I felt like I had been sucker-punched, smoke came out of my ears, and I was asking someone, anyone for a glass of water. Don’t get me wrong - it tasted really good, but I couldn’t take the heat. Paradoxically, some of my friends consider them only moderately spicy, and my own brother pops them like candy. So much for genetics.
So, there you have it. If you want a lovely spicy note in your cup of hot tea, drop a slice of our crystallized ginger into the cup and let the flavor infuse. Sip the tea slowly and enjoy in a calm civilized manner. If your palate can take it, and you want to rough up your taste buds, go for the spicy mango slices, grab some drumsticks and have fun.
If you’re too young to know about Ginger Baker and Cream, pull out your smart phone and listen to their music. I think you’ll like what you hear.
